Characters: (this section: Gwen, Owen, Tosh)
Pairings: (series: Jack/Ianto, Ianto/OC, Owen/OC mentioned: Tosh/Mary, Owen/Gwen)
Summary: Gwen learns something she wasn't expecting....
Disclaimer: I don't own these characters or make a profit
A/N: This isn't intended as Gwen bashing. This is intended as looking at Gwen's thoughts, which I think are usually pretty selfish, particularily at this point of the series.
A/N(2): I'm looking for a beta (or betas) as I don't have any. If anyone happens to be interested, send me a message.
A/N(3): If you were hoping for more between Jack and Ianto like the last chapter, send me a note or make a request. The story needed wrapping up with Gwen, but there can be follow-up if it's desired.
When Owen had suggested they all go out for drinks, Gwen had thought that she’d be the only one to accept. Ianto had immediately excused himself and said that Jack would probably need his help cleaning the weapons. Owen had smirked and Tosh had grinned a little and for some reason Ianto had blushed.
So they’ve all got a little joke and I’m not in on it, Gwen had thought. She’d frowned, and frowned a little more when Owen had insisted that Tosh come for an afternoon drink with them.
Doesn’t make sense, Gwen mused to herself at the bar. The way Ianto and Jack were acting today. Owen and Tosh had started discussing just what UNIT must have been thinking in keeping them out of the loop. “Conspiracy,” Owen finally said. “Absolutely a conspiracy.”
“I think you’re right,” Tosh replied.
“All right,” Owen declared, sweeping his gaze over to Gwen. “What’re you thinking about?”
“Sorry,” Gwen mumbled. She forced a thin smile. “It’s nothing.”
“You’ve been quiet this whole time,” Tosh replied.
“Yeah, and you’re never quiet,” Owen chimed in.
Gwen frowned again and glanced between the two of them. “Did you two notice anything odd about the way Jack and Ianto were acting today?”
“Odd?” Tosh echoed.
Owen rolled his eyes at Tosh. “You’re really going to play dumb?” he muttered.
“I made a promise,” Tosh whispered.
“I didn’t,” Owen replied a little more loudly. “And since you and I know, is there really much sense in not telling her?”
“We don’t have the right,” Tosh pressed.
“Okay,” Gwen said slowly with a big fake smile, “what’s going on here?”
“We really shouldn’t say,” Tosh told her.
“’Cept it’s going to affect the way we operate. You saw that today, didn’t you? Ianto nearly got himself killed when Jack wasn’t looking. If you hadn’t gotten that shotgun off in time, that thing would have been on him,” Owen pointed out. “All because Ianto put himself in its path so it wouldn’t attack Jack.”
They can’t possibly mean that. “They’re together?” Gwen asked in disbelief.
“Sleeping together,” Owen corrected. “Not dating.”
Tosh rolled her eyes. “Did you really need to make that distinction?”
“Ianto did to me this morning,” Owen replied. “So if she’s going to know, then she may as well know the facts.”
Gwen hardly heard them. Jack’s sleeping with Ianto? What about me? “I didn’t think Ianto was gay,” Gwen said. “After all, you know, Lisa.”
“You have heard the term bisexual, haven’t you?” Owen asked a little cruelly.
“Owen,” Tosh admonished, but Owen only shrugged and took a drink.
“But they’re sleeping together?” Gwen asked for clarification.
Owen frowned at her. “Yeah,” he said slowly. “That’s what we said.”
Just doesn’t work out in my head. I mean, I guess I’ve seen Jack flirt with him, but I thought there was something between us. Some little spark. Maybe I should have gone to him instead of Owen. Did I lose my chance? “Since when?” Gwen continued.
Tosh shrugged. Owen glared and said, “Now that really isn’t your business, now is it?”
“I guess not,” Gwen stammered.
“I didn’t tell you so you could freak out over it,” Owen drawled.
“I’m not,” Gwen lied with a smile. I just don’t understand. I suppose I shouldn’t have assumed that Jack would just stay celibate because we’d been flirting. Oh God, does he know about me and Owen? Is that why he’s sleeping with Ianto? Because he thinks I’m not interested? She tried to smile a little more though Owen and Tosh were still staring at her strangely. “What?” she asked.
“Your phone’s ringing,” Owen replied.
Oh shit! Gwen dug her mobile out and glanced down at it. Rhys. “Hey love,” she said as she answered.
“Work emergency over?” Rhys asked.
“Yep,” Gwen said. “We’re just finishing a little paperwork and then I’ll be home.” How many times have I lied to him?
“Great! I’m just going to run to the store for dinner supplies then. Or do you want to come with me for that?”
“Go ahead and do that without me,” Gwen told him. “But I’ll make sure to be home in time for dinner.”
“All right. See you later, love.”
Gwen hung up the phone and slid it back into her pocket.
“You could go home if you need to,” Tosh said quietly.
“I need a few more minutes,” Gwen replied. “Won’t hurt anything.”
“Well, if you’re sure,” Tosh said.
Owen was staring at Gwen and she couldn’t read his expression. Can I get a quick fuck out of him before I get back to Rhys? And what is Tosh so sour about? She’s done plenty of lying herself lately. Oh, screw all this! “You know, I think I am going to go,” Gwen said a she rose. “I’ll see you both Monday.”
“Unless another alien mother’s expecting tomorrow,” Tosh tried to joke.
Gwen feigned another smile and then left. Jack and Ianto. Ianto and Jack, she thought as she walked to her car. Still don’t get it. Or how I missed that happening. The others found out before me, but why? Tosh must have heard it with that pendant thingy I guess. But Ianto told Owen? Why’d he tell Owen and not me first? I didn’t think they were even friends. They certainly never act like it.
Gwen crossed her arms as she hurried her pace. Certainly never thought Ianto was gay or bisexual or whatever. Never picked up on that. And I’m usually so good at that type of thing. But does this mean I’ll never have a chance with Jack? She took a deep breath. Does it matter? I’m already cheating on Rhys with one man, isn’t that enough? Oh, Gwen Cooper, you’re a terrible woman sometimes. But he wouldn’t understand my job even if I could tell him. Sex with Owen is just sex. But Jack. Oh Jack. Just what am I doing thinking about you anyway? You’re happy. I’m supposed to be happy.
I just hope Ianto doesn’t betray you again.
